Home Safety Checklist for Seniors
Simple steps families and caregivers can take to create a safer, more comfortable and supportive home environment for older adults.
As we age, everyday activities at home can become more challenging. Stairs, slippery floors, poor lighting, loose rugs and cluttered walkways can increase the risk of falls and injuries.
Creating a safer home can help older adults maintain their independence, comfort, confidence and quality of life. Families and caregivers can use this checklist to identify common hazards and make simple improvements.
1. Prevent Falls Throughout the Home
Clear and stable walking areas can help reduce unnecessary fall risks.
✅ Remove loose rugs or secure them with non-slip backing.
✅ Keep hallways and walking areas free of clutter.
✅ Keep electrical cords away from walking paths.
✅ Repair loose flooring, carpeting or uneven surfaces.
✅ Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
✅ Keep furniture from blocking normal walking paths.
✅ Use prescribed walkers, canes or mobility devices when needed.
2. Improve Lighting
Good lighting helps seniors identify obstacles and move more safely throughout the home.
✅ Install bright lighting in hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms and stairways.
✅ Use nightlights between the bedroom and bathroom.
✅ Make sure light switches are easy to reach.
✅ Replace burned-out bulbs promptly.
✅ Keep a lamp or light switch within reach of the bed.

3. Make the Bathroom Safer
Bathrooms deserve special attention because wet surfaces can become slippery.
